Víctor Manuel San José Sánchez, known professionally as Víctor Manuel, is a renowned Spanish singer-songwriter and producer born in 1947 in Mieres del Camino. From an early age, he showed a strong passion for music, learning to play the harmonica at the age of nine and writing his first song when he was just twelve years old.
In 1964, he moved to Madrid and began his musical career, appearing on television programmes and recording his first singles with the Belter label in 1965. Although his early songs covered a variety of themes, his outlook and political views evolved over time.
In 1967, he achieved his first successes at music festivals. Throughout the 1960s, he continued composing and recording music, steadily establishing himself as an important figure in the Spanish music scene.
In 1970, his album Quiero abrazarte tanto propelled him to success and led to a tour across Latin America. In 1971, he released his third album, Dame la mano. It was during this period that he met actress Ana Belén, with whom he began a relationship and starred in the film Morbo.
In 1973, Víctor released the album Verde, featuring adaptations of traditional Asturian songs. Two years later, he published Cómicos, an album supporting the strike of Spanish actors. In 1976, he released two albums, one live recording and another with political content entitled Canto para todos. That same year, his home was the target of an attack. However, Víctor never stopped sharing his talent, and in 1979 he released Soy un corazón tendido al sol, a bestseller that firmly established his career.
Throughout the 1980s, he continued recording and producing music while also beginning a career as a film producer. He became actively involved in defending the rights of authors and artists.
In 1986, his duet with Ana Belén, La Puerta de Alcalá, became a major success. Just one year later, he founded his own record production company, Ion Música.
In 1994, he released Mucho más que dos, a highly successful recording project with Ana Belén, and two years later they embarked on El gusto es nuestro, one of the most successful concert tours in Spain.
Years later, in 2015, Víctor Manuel and Ana Belén presented the album Canciones Regaladas and published their memoir, Antes de que sea tarde: Memorias descosidas.
In 2016, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his musical career and commemorated the El gusto es nuestro tour. In 2017, he participated in a collaborative album and served as the official announcer for the San Xuan festivities in Mieres del Camín. He also received the "Mierense en el Mundo 2012" award.
