On November 30, the Pajares Bypass and the long-awaited high-speed rail line (AVE) connecting Madrid and Asturias were officially inaugurated. This new infrastructure significantly improves travel times, bringing Oviedo to just over three hours from the Spanish capital.
The benefits are substantial, with travel times reduced by up to 75 minutes. The Pajares Bypass, backed by an investment of nearly €4 billion, allows Renfe passengers to enjoy a much more efficient travel experience. The journey between Madrid and Oviedo, which previously ranged from 4 hours and 24 minutes to over 6 hours, can now be completed in just over 3 hours, making rail travel a competitive alternative to flying.
Gijón also benefits from this new connection, with a travel time of approximately 3.5 hours from Madrid. This improvement in railway infrastructure redefines mobility between the capital and Asturias, offering unprecedented efficiency and comfort.
The New Avril Trains
Unlike conventional AVE services, the Madrid-Asturias route is operated by Avril trains (Alta Velocidad Rueda Independiente Ligero, or Lightweight Independent Wheel High-Speed Trains). These modern trains, introduced in 2024, reach speeds of between 300 and 330 km/h. They stand out not only for their speed but also for their high capacity, significantly increasing the number of available seats.

Asturias Closer to Valencia

This includes approximately 90 minutes on the Valencia-Madrid AVE service, a little over 3 hours from Madrid to Asturias, and the transfer time required between both journeys.
